Seattle Teens At Risk For Eating Disorders

Hello! Welcome to the Seattle children’s health blog. I am Organic MXI Chocolate Consultant Adam Paul Green. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Seattle children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Mercer Island area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Mercer Island about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Seattle parents should be aware that even young Mercer Island children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

Washington pediatricians can help Seattle parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

New Sunscreen Recommendations For Seattle Infants Babies love to be outdoors on a sunny Mercer Island day, but a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that changes in the skin that lead to skin cancer may actually occur in a person’s first year. However, sunscreen is not recommended for Seattle children under six months of age. What’s a parent to do?

Mercer Island parents should be aware that infants have a much higher body surface to volume ratio than adults. Because of this, babies absorb much more of the chemicals in the sunscreen.

In addition, younger babies don’t sweat as efficiently as those older, so they are at greater risk of becoming dehydrated, and sunscreen can impair effective cooling by perspiration.

Mercer Island parents should dress infants in protective clothing and hats and keep them in the shade. If needed, a little sunscreen can be used on the face and hands, where sunburns often occur in young Mercer Island children.

Food labels can be confusing for Mercer Island parents wanting to buy the most nutritious food possible for their families. The word ‘natural’ can convey wholesomeness–but that’s not always the case.

Look for more specific food labels like ‘organic’ which means, in fruits and vegetables, that the food is grown without pesticides. Some evidence suggests that organic fruits and vegetables contain higher amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients than non-organic.

The organic label on poultry, meat, and dairy means that no antibiotics, hormones, or pesticides are given to the animals, and the livestock are given only organic feed. ‘Organic’ livestock also must have access to the outdoors, and disease is prevented through natural methods.

‘Natural’ isn’t a term regulated by the FDA, so products with this label may still contain additives. Instead, look for the USDA organic badge, a guarantee that there is no high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil, genetically modified ingredients, or artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners.

Fun Peanut Butter Snacks For Mercer Island Kids

Healthy, growing children need to snack between meals for proper nutrition. Most Seattle parents have probably had the experience of forgetting an afternoon snack. What happens? Kids finally notice they’re hungry about an hour before dinner, and boy is it hard to wait!

A great snack ingredient is peanut butter. It is an inexpensive source of protein and calories and gives Seattle children the nutrients they need to grow and to stay healthy.

Here are some great healthy snack ideas using peanut butter for Seahurst and Renton kids.

Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Bananas, cut in half width-wise
Popsicle sticks
Peanut butter
Chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other topping

Take the popsicle sticks and push them carefully into the cut bananas. Spread peanut butter over the bananas and roll in nuts or other topping. Freeze. Enjoy.

Peanut Butter Balls

This is the kind of recipe you can’t really mess up, and the portions are approximate.

about 1 cup of peanut butter
a few tablespoons of honey (2-3)
a few tablespoons of instant dry milk

Mix everything together until it forms a large ball. Pinch off small pieces of dough, and roll into ball shapes. Store in the refrigerator, and pull them out at snack time.

Internet Safety For Renton Kids

No Renton parent wants their child to be exposed to Internet pornography, however, this tragedy occurs everyday. Why is there such a disconnect?

Some Renton parents may not realize that their young child can navigate the computer like a pro. Others may believe that their child would never go looking for inappropriate material.

If you think your Mercer Island kids are too young to worry about it, don’t be so sure. Washington parents continue to report that they found out too late that their child was exposed. I urge you to take precautions now.

With Internet pornography increasing everyday and young people succumbing to this cybermonster, Mercer Island parents wonder what they can do to prevent this from ever happening to their kids.

This advice bears repeating: Renton parents should put the computer in an open area so that it can be monitored. In addition, many forms of web protection are available for free. Though it is time-consuming, Renton parents would be wise to only allow their child use the Internet with Mom or Dad present.

Talk to your kids and ask them if they have encountered Internet pornography. Ask them what they did or what they would do in such a situation. Though this is a secondary concern: explain to them that certain web pages and ‘pop ups’ contain viruses that can damage the computer. Open communication is essential.

If your Renton children have encountered pornography, perhaps at a friend’s house, emphasize its destructive nature and teach them that what they saw is degrading to men, women, and healthy relationships. Internet pornography is a plague with many Renton victims, including children. It is up to Renton parents and youth leaders to help Renton children be safe online.
